Your bedroom was pitch black. Not a single light shone through the darkness. A creak of your wooden floorboards woke you from your deep sleep.

You groaned as you reached an arm out of the warmth of your comforter to reach the switch to your bedside lamp. The sudden light caused you to squint and instinctively cover your eyes.

It took a minute for your eyes to adjust and you lowered your hand after rubbing the sleep out of your eyes.

You froze as you realized that you weren’t alone. Standing in the corner of your small room was a man with blond hair. He smiled as you made eye contact.

“Hello (y/n).” His words cut through the silence like a knife. You started to reach for the pocket knife you kept by your bed without him noticing. “I wouldn’t do that. I’m just here to talk.”

“First, I want to know who you are. Also, I’d like to know how you got in here.” He smirked and took a step closer to you.

“I am Lucifer.”

“The Lucifer? As in the devil?” He only nodded and you swore that a hint of sadness flashed in his eyes. It came and went so quickly you thought you may have imagined it. “Why does the devil want to speak with me?”

“Do you recall that I am an angel?” You nodded and he continued. “I was thrown from Heaven long ago because I loved God too much. As such, need permission to enter a vessel.”

“Enter a vessel? You mean possess?”

“You ask a lot of questions. Let me try to explain. I am in need of a new vessel while I wait for the true vessel to say yes. As you can see, this one may not last much longer.” He stepped closer and you flinched when you saw he burns on his face. “I just need you to say one simple word.”

“But why me? There are billions of people that you could choose from.”

“You’ll last longer than any of the others because of what’s in your blood. You’re related to those Winchesters. A lost half-brother that they don’t know even exist. It’s sad how much importance they put on family and yet so much of it gets left behind or forgotten.”

“I don’t even know who you’re talking about. The only Winchester I know is my father, John Winchester. I never even met him; I only know his name. How do I know that you’re telling the truth? You are Satan after all.”

“I’m telling the truth. If you don’t accept that, than that’s your choice.” Again a momentary flash of hurt crossed his face.

“I don’t think so. I don’t want anyone controlling my body.”

“Think about it. I’ll come again in one week.” With that he disappeared and you swore that you heard a sound like the flutter of wings.

You sat simply staring at the spot where he had stood moments ago. You couldn’t help but wonder if any of that was even real. Maybe your mind was playing tricks on you.

~oOo~

Even though you were convinced that Lucifer had simply been a dream, you kept replaying the scene in your head. If that was real, Lucifer was a lot different from what you were expecting. There were two traits that defied your expectations.

One trait was that his physical appearance was a lot nicer than the red horned devil you’d seen in pictures. Even despite his burns, he was good looking and that surprised you.

The second, was his honesty. When people had described Lucifer to you, they had explained about how he had been an angel and his fall. They also told stories about his trickery and deceit. You could tell that those were major misconceptions. In his eyes had been the look of someone telling the truth and desperate for help. Thinking about that, you knew you couldn’t just leave him to find help on his own. You needed to help this misunderstood angel.

~oOo~

As he had promised, exactly one week after his first appearance, he reappeared. As before you awoke to the flutter of his wings and quickly turned on your lamp to see him. You had started to doubt that he was real but this was confirmation enough for you.

“Have you come to a decision, (y/n)?” His voice sliced through the darkness making you smile.

“I have. I will be your vessel.” You replied trying to hide your nervousness. You knew this was what you wanted to do but you had no idea what was to happen.

“Then I need to hear one, simple word from you. Just say yes and we can be on our way.”

“Yes.” A light that seemed to come from him grew in magnitude until it was too bright for you to keep your eyes open any longer. Through the light you heard one reassuring phrase.

“Don’t be afraid, (y/n).”

~oOo~

Having him inhabit your body was another surprise for you. You thought that you would simply disappear until he was done. Instead you were conscious but disconnected from your body. You could see everything that he did but couldn’t control anything.

At first, you had started to panic about the lack of control but calmed when he had reassured you.

So he can hear me.

It was hard for you to get used to someone else controlling your body. It was if you were simply watching someone’s life from the passenger seat. It didn’t help that he practically teleported where he needed to be. It often felt you feeling disoriented.

There wasn’t much you could do except think and watch. Often, you “talked” to him. These were usually one-sided conversations ending with him telling you to be quiet. Sometimes however, he responded. Conversations could draw on a long time between Lucifer and yourself. Those times made you happier than you would have ever thought before.

Even when he went to kill, murder, or torture others for info, you knew that he had a good reason for doing so. Whenever you couldn’t find or understand his reasons, you resisted and shouted at him until he gave in or explained his purpose.

As time passed however, you could feel heat rising from within your body. With each passing day, the heat intensified. Soon it became so hot that you had had trouble thinking about anything except it.

You knew it was bad when you stood facing the mirror. Across your once smooth skin, were burns. They crawled up your neck and small burned spots speckled your cheeks and forehead. It was almost worse than when you had first seen Lucifer’s previous vessel.

~oOo~

A week after having seen your face in the mirror you suddenly woke in your bed. It was as if waking from a long dream and it took you a minute to realize that your constant companion was gone. You were once again in control of your own body.

“Lucifer. If you’re still out there somewhere, please talk to me. Why did you leave?” You prayed. As you waited, the silence became deafening. Each passing second was agonizing as you continued to pray for him.

You heard the familiar flutter before you saw him standing beside you. Upon seeing him in his old vessel again, you let out a breath you hadn’t realized that you’d been holding.

“I had no choice. Your body couldn’t contain me for much longer.”

“Neither will that one. Why save me and not him?”

“This one is just a vessel to me. You talked to me. More than the others. In most vessels the only thing I can hear is their screams and cries of anger. Instead, you tried to reason with me.”

“You care about me?” His only response was a solitary nod. “But what will you do now?”

“I will keep asking Sam Winchester until he says yes. Until then, I will make do with this. Goodbye (y/n).” He turned to leave but you grabbed his hand.

“Wait, will I see you again?”

“It’s too dangerous. I won’t risk your life more than I have already.”

You knew there was no way to change his mind if that was his logic. You continued to hold his hand as you stood next to him and gently placed your lips upon his. You had expected it to be one sided but he kissed you back. When he pulled back, he also pulled his hand from yours.

“Goodbye (y/n)”

Those were the last words you heard from Lucifer before he disappeared before your eyes. You stood staring at the empty space and a single word quietly escaped from your mouth.

“Goodbye.”
